Philippine sport mourns boxing president/sportscaster Ed Picson

Manila, Philippines, April 20, 2023: Philippine sport, in particular the boxing community, is mourning the passing of Edgar “Ed” Picson.

The President of the Association of Boxing Alliances in the Philippines (ABAP) and veteran sportscaster died on Wednesday, April 19 after a battle with liver cancer. He was 69.

“Philippine sports lost a pillar — both inside and outside the boxing ring,” reported the Daily Tribune.

“It is with deep sadness that I confirm that ABAP President Ed Picson passed away this morning (Wednesday) due to complications from cancer of the liver,” ABAP Secretary General Marcus Manalo said in a statement.

Philippine Olympic Committee President Abraham “Bambol” Tolentino posted on social media: “My dear friend Ed, may you Rest In Peace. Eternal rest grant unto him oh Lord. And let perpetual light shine upon him. May he Rest In Peace. My sincere condolences to the bereaved family of Ed.”

Channel News 5 reported that, before the start of the Philippine Basketball Association Governor's Cup Finals Game 5 between Barangay Ginebra and Talk 'N Text Tropang Giga, the last buzzer was sounded at Smart Araneta Coliseum in memory of the veteran sports broadcaster.

The Muaythai Association of the Philippines commented: “Our hearts are heavy as we mourn the passing of our dear friend and ally, Edgar E. Picson. He was a true champion for Philippine sports, and a dedicated advocate for the development of our athletes.

“We extend our deepest sympathies to his family, friends, and colleagues in the industry. Rest in power, Edgar. You will be sorely missed.”
