Olympic heroes named ‘best of the best’ at Hong Kong sports stars awards

Hong Kong, China, April 18, 2023: Tokyo 2020 Olympic Games heroes Cheung Ka Long (fencing) and Siobhan Haughey (swimming) have been named “Best of the Best” again in the Cathay 2022 Hong Kong Sports Stars Awards.

The Sports Federation and Olympic Committee of Hong Kong, China held the awards presentation ceremony at the Hong Kong Convention and Exhibition Centre on Tuesday, April 18. 

Olympic men’s individual foil champion Cheung, who won another historic gold at the Paris World Cup, and two-time Olympic silver medalist Haughey, who snapped up one gold and one silver at the 2022 FINA World Swimming Championships (25m), were dominant as both were awarded "Best of the Best” for men and women, respectively.

SF&OC received 96 nominations from 46 National Sports Associations in this year's awards. Following voting by judging panels, the media and the public, all 16 winners across four award categories were determined.

This year marked the fourth time Cheung has won the award as he continued to shine on the international sports stage. 

Freestyle sensation Haughey was also winning the top award for the fourth time after amassing seven golds and one bronze in three consecutive FINA Swimming World Cups (25m).

Hong Kong’s men's rugby sevens team was awarded Hong Kong Sports Stars Award for Team Only Sport - the 11th honour for the team since they first won the award back in 2008. Hong Kong are the reigning Asian Games champions.

The award for team event went to the women's epee team, the women’s squash team and women’s doubles para table tennis team of Ng Mui Wui/Wong Ting Ting.

SF&OC President Timothy Fok said: "Hong Kong athletes have performed outstandingly in international competitions. Their hard work and achievements are the pride of Hong Kong. 

“In addition to inviting athletes and representatives of National Sports Associations to attend this year's Awards Presentation Ceremony, we have also invited the families and friends of the nominated athletes and members of the Olympic Fan Club to participate in the event tonight and share the joy. 

“I believe that athletes and the sport sector as a whole will spare no effort in giving their best in the Hangzhou Asian Games this September, Paris 2024 Olympic and the National Games in 2025 co-hosted by Guangdong Province, Hong Kong and Macao. They will once again demonstrate the fruits of their hard work and showcase Hong Kong's soft power through sports."
