Indian fencer Bhavani Devi wins excellence in sports award

New Delhi, India, April 6, 2023: India’s Olympic Games fencer CA Bhavani Devi has received another award in her ground-breaking career.

The 29-year-old sabre specialist from Chennai was presented with The Hindu Excellence in Sports Award during the World of Women 2023 event organised by The Hindu newspaper.

The awards covered several fields, including film, society, agriculture and sports.

“Honored to be among such accomplished individuals at the World of Women's event, where Hindu groups recognized excellence in sports, film, society, agriculture and more. Thank you @the_hindu,” she posted on social media.

Among the other recipients was Kartiki Gonsalves, the Indian documentary filmmaker and photographer who directed the documentary film The Elephant Whisperers that won the Academy Award for Best Documentary Short Film at the 95th Academy Awards.

Bhavani Devi added: “A special shoutout to @kartikigonsalves for winning an Oscar for her incredible documentary ‘The Elephant Whisperers’. Your passion for storytelling and dedication to capturing the beauty of wildlife is truly inspiring.”

Bhavani Devi became the first fencer from India to qualify for the Olympic Games when she competed at Tokyo 2020. She is ranked 45 in women’s sabre individual in the latest world rankings for 2022-23 by the International Fencing Federation (FIE).
