Lausanne, Switzerland, January 20, 2020: There is much more to the Winter Youth Olympic Games than gold, silver and bronze medals. The opportunity to compete in this international winter sports fest and gain experience to take back home is also part of the YOG journey for the non-traditional winter sports countries such as Malaysia.
The Olympic Council of Malaysia has been keeping the folks back home right up to date with events at Lausanne 2020 and their latest Facebook post focuses on short track speed skaters Dione Tan and Sean Yeo who competed in the women’s and men’s 500m, respectively, on Monday.
Dione finished third in her heat and was ranked 24th out of 29 skaters. Sean also finished third in his heat with a personal best time of 44.026 seconds and was ranked 20th of 32 competitors.
“The Malaysia Ice Skating Federation has confirmed that both the results achieved by Sean in Short Track Speed Skating Men’s 1,000m (1:31.117) and Men’s 500m (44.026) are Malaysia national records.
“The OCM would like to congratulate both Sean Yeo and Dione Tan for having qualified to compete in the III Winter Youth Olympic Games Lausanne 2020 and for their remarkable achievements. Both of them have indeed made Malaysians proud.”
A total of 1,872 athletes from 79 NOCs are competing in eight sports, 16 disciplines and 81 events at the Winter YOG from January 9-22. Twelve NOCs are making their Winter YOG debut including six from Asia: Hong Kong-China, Pakistan, Qatar, Singapore, Thailand and Turkmenistan.
