Amman, Jordan, April 2, 2023: IOC Executive Board member HRH Prince Faisal bin Al-Hussein has welcomed the decision by the IOC to create a fund of US$10 million per Olympic cycle to promote athletes’ safety.
The Jordan Olympic Committee President, who has been appointed Chair of the IOC Prevention of Harassment and Abuse in Sport (PHAS) Working Group, called the decision an “historic moment in this field”.
Prince Faisal said: “Over the past few years, cases of harassment and abuse in sport have continued to come to light with increasing frequency – showing no discrimination in sport, discipline or geographical location.
“As we look towards a new chapter and convene this working group, it is essential that we come together and look to see how we may bridge the gap between the important work being done at international level, and the need for local solutions,” Prince Faisal added.
IOC President Thomas Bach presented the IOC EB proposal of a PHAS Working Group chaired by Prince Faisal at a three-day EB meeting in Lausanne, Switzerland, last week.
It was attended by representatives from 36 International Federations, plus the Association of Summer Olympic International Federations and the Association of Winter Olympics International Federations.
Prince Faisal added: “We must be more determined than ever to protect athletes. One case is one case too many. Together we can make a difference.”
