Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia, March 31, 2023: The Asian Hockey Federation is reflecting on a successful AHF Ordinary Congress held at Mungyeong, Korea earlier this month.
Not only did the AHF elect a new executive board, it also established the women’s advisory panel to enhance women’s leadership and participation in Asia.
The congress also appointed four more AHF athlete ambassadors, building on an initiative that began in 2022, with two of the new ambassadors female to ensure gender balance.
Player of the year awards and cash prizes were also presented, 2,000 USD for senior players male and female and 1,000 USD for emerging players male and female.
Sri Lanka’s male and female athletes won a prize of 10,000 USD to support their development and welfare.
The men’s and women’s teams of India won the Best Achievement Award for their performances in various competitions held during 2021, 2022 and 2023, and the Best Achievement Award was presented to the Iran men’s indoor hockey team for winning bronze in the recently held Indoor Hockey World Cup.
FIH President Tayyab Ikram championed athletes’ rights and welfare and urged athletes to raise their voice on issues of concern and become involved in the decision-making of the AHF.
Tayyab encouraged the National Associations and AHF to go green and promote sustainability through hockey. Hockey India responded immediately to the appeal of the FIH President and announced plans to plant 100,000 trees in India.
“We should promote peace through sports, we should make hockey more inclusive for the underprivileged and deserving,” said Tayyab.
