Phnom Penh, Cambodia, March 28, 2023: The Secretary General of the National Olympic Committee of Cambodia (NOCC), Vath Chamroeun, has stressed the importance of volunteers in making the 32nd SEA Games a success.
Cambodia will make history in May by hosting the South East Asian Games for the first time since the regional sports festival was first held in 1959, and this will be followed by the 12th ASEAN Para Games in June.
Vath, an Olympian and also Secretary General of the organising committee CAMSOC, knows from his own experiences with the NOCC that volunteers play a huge part in the efficient running of any major international multi-sports event – and Cambodia is looking to recruit 7,000 volunteers to work at the SEA Games and ASEAN Para Games.
Speaking at the SEA Games and ASEAN Para Games volunteer orientation session, Vath said: “In sports, volunteers are the main component to make the Games run smoothly.
“If the volunteers don’t give a warm and friendly welcome to each delegate, the Games won’t go smoothly as planned. Therefore, I would like to suggest to all our volunteers to do your best to succeed at the Games because you are part of history.”
Vath also encouraged the volunteers to take responsibility to fulfill their duties during the Games and to be proud of themselves for supporting the Kingdom at this historic time for the Olympic sports movement in Cambodia, South East Asia, Asia and the world.
“The SEA Games and ASEAN Para Games will be an historic moment for all the countries in the region,” he added.
“These are the biggest events that many youths from different countries will be attending - living, eating, competing and showing respect to each other.”
The 32nd SEA Games will run from May 5-17 in Phnom Penh and four co-host provinces, while the 12th ASEAN Para Games will follow from June 3-9.
