Manila, Philippines, February 10, 2023: Tropical Philippines will be represented on ice in the next Winter Youth Olympic Games by short track speed skater Peter Groseclose.
The 15-year-old Filipino-American has earned a berth to the 2024 Winter YOG in Gangwon, Korea, the Philippine Skating Union (PHSU) announced on Thursday, February 9.
Groseclose made the cut after his strong showing in the ISU Junior World Short Track Speed Skating in Dresden, Germany.
“This would be a momentous event for the Philippines,” PHSU posted on social media.
“While Peter is only 15 and it’s his first international season, he showed that he can deliver good standing amongst the best junior skaters in the world,” said PHSU President Nikki Cheng, noting that Groseclose competed against “other juniors with years more experience.”
Groseclose will enter the 500m, 1000m and 1,500m short track events of the Winter YOG from January 19 to February 1 in Gangwon, which will use the venues built for the PyeongChang 2018 Winter Olympics.
Groseclose would be the third Filipino ice skater to compete in the Winter YOG following short track speed skater Julian Macaraeg in the 2020 edition in Lausanne, Switzerland and figure skater Michael Martinez in the 2012 edition in Innsbruck, Austria.
