Doha, Qatar, January 31, 2023: HE Mohamed Yousef Al Mana, First Vice President of the Qatar Olympic Committee, has praised the organisation of the Beach Volleyball World Pro Tour Finals for men and women.
The tournament concluded at Aspire Zone beach courts on Sunday, January 29. The top 10 men’s and top 10 women’s international teams participated with the total prize money amounting to US$800,000.
“Qatar’s hosting of such international championships is part of the strategy of the Qatar Olympic Committee, headed by HE the President of QOC Sheikh Joaan bin Hamad Al-Thani, which aims to promote a sports culture in Qatari society, and to maintain the state’s pioneer-ship in organising and hosting sporting events,” Mohamed Yousef was quoted by Qatar News Agency.
The QOC First Vice President also indicated that the outstanding organisation of the tournament was yet another success for Qatar’s legacy in holding major events and tournaments, and following in the wake of the successful FIFA World Cup 2022 Qatar.
Mohamed Yousef also praised Aspire Zone Foundation and the Qatar Volleyball Association’s good organisation, noting that the tournament’s success confirmed Qatar’s status in the game.
Americans Sara Hughes and Kelly Cheng and Norwegian Olympic champions Anders Mol and Christian Sorum won the women’s and men’s titles respectively. Qatar men’s pair and Tokyo 2020 Olympics bronze medallists Cherif Younousse and Ahmed Tijan finished joint-seventh.
The President of the Qatar and West Asia Volleyball Associations, Ali bin Ghanem Al Kuwari, said the home team participation was part of the qualifying campaign for the Paris 2024 Olympics.
Al Kuwari pointed out that Qatar would host the West Asian Championship from February 21-25 in which Qatar will field two teams. This will be a qualifier for Paris 2024.
