Asia wins four golds at short-course swimming world championships

Melbourne, Australia, December 20, 2022: Asia won a total of four gold medals at the recently concluded 16th FINA World Swimming Championships (25m) in Melbourne, Australia.

World governing body FINA – now known as World Aquatics to encompass all six disciplines – published the final medal table on their Facebook account on December 20.

Japan finished in sixth place with two gold medals, plus two silver and two bronze for a six-medal haul. Short-course specialist Daiya Seto accounted for both Japanese gold – in the men’s 200m breaststroke and men’s 400m medley.

Hong Kong, China (1-1-0) finished ninth thanks to the gold medal for double Olympic silver medallist Siobhan Haughey in the women’s 200m freestyle, while Korea (1-0-0) came in 11th equal with a single gold medal for Hwang Sun-woo in the men’s 200m freestyle.

The top 10 in the rankings were: 1, United States of America (17-13-6); 2, Australia (13-8-5); 3, Italy (5-6-5); 4, Canada (3-4-7); 5, South Africa (3-1-1); 6, Japan (2-2-2); 7, France (1-3-1); 8, Netherlands (1-1-6); 9, Hong Kong, China (1-1-0); 10, Lithuania (1-0-1).

Others: 11, Republic of Korea (1-0-0); 21, People's Republic of China (0-0-2).

The short-course world championships ran from December 13-18.
