Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia, December 12, 2022: The Olympic Council of Malaysia is the latest National Olympic Committee to benefit from the Olympic Council of Asia’s Social Development Through Olympism and Education programme.
Social Development Through Olympism and Education is part of the OCA’s Olympic Solidarity Continental Programme and aims to promote gender equity and women empowerment and involvement.
The OCM conducted their two-day course on Saturday and Sunday, December 10-11. The programme was in the form of “Multilateral First Step to the Olympic Course” for 30 female teachers and coaches from five selected schools in Kuala Lumpur, Selangor and Negeri Sembilan.
The theory session was held on Saturday in the training hall of the OCM Indoor Sports Complex with only the teachers and coaches, while the four-hour practical session took place on Sunday at the Mini Stadium, National Sports Council, with the participation of the students from the respective schools.
Dato’ Paduka Mumtaz Jaffar, OCM Vice President and Chairperson of the OCM Women and Sport Committee, welcomed the participants on the first day and said the course would enhance the knowledge of the teachers and coaches in various aspects of sport such as endurance, strength, speed, flexibility and coordination.
Dato’ Haji Ahmad Feisal Ahmad Tajuddin, OCM Treasurer and Chairperson of the OCM Finance Committee, added: “On behalf of OCM, we would like to convey our most profound gratitude to the OCA for granting us a total of USD 10,000 to organise this educational programme.”
Ms. Moira Tan Siew See, OCM Assistant Secretary General who is also Chairperson of the OCM Education and Training Committee, also shared a session on the Olympic Values Education Programme (OVEP) with the teachers and coaches.
The course was conducted by six qualified lecturers of World Athletics - Mdm. Tong Heng Kit, Mdm. Tamilslve Periasamy, Mr. Chin Peng Hon, Mr. Jeevanathan M Ponniamoorthy, Mr. Tiruvatiran Vedivelu and Mr. Freddy Afendi.
National sprinter Komalam Shally Selvaretnam demonstrated the technique of running and sprinting. She also guided the students in the warm-up and warm-down techniques at the beginning and the ending of the practical sessions.
The five stations of activity were: sprint & hurdle, cross hop, shot put, long jump and vortex throw.
Olympian Nurul Huda Abdullah, a legendary swimmer of Malaysia in the 1980s and a member of the OCM Women and Sport Committee, was invited to share her experiences to motivate students to excel in sports.
In her closing speech, Dato’ Paduka Mumtaz Jaffar thanked the OCA for providing the funding, Nestle for providing food and drinks, the Malaysia Athletics Federation for providing the technical support, the World Athletics-accredited lecturers for conducting the course, and the teachers, coaches and students for their participation.
“The key success of this programme is the transformation of what you have learnt from the course into real actions in your respective schools,” stated Dato’ Paduka Mumtaz Jaffar, who presented the Certificate of Participation issued by the OCM to the teachers, coaches and students.
