Manila, Philippines, November 29, 2022: The Philippines’ Tokyo 2020 Olympic Games pole vaulter Ernest “EJ” Obiena has been named Athlete of the Year by the prestigious Esquire lifestyle magazine in Manila.
The Italy-based World No. 3, who enjoyed a successful summer season in Europe, was one of Esquire's eight “extraordinary Filipinos reshaping society in 2022”.
Obiena, 27, commented on his Athlete of the Year award: “I can’t say it enough: It is truly an honor to be this year’s @esquireph athlete of the year.
“I couldn’t have done this without my ever-growing team, from my coach to my physios and the people behind the scenes that make sure everything works and works seamlessly. You guys are the reason I am able to pursue this dream of mine.”
Obiena added: “2022, what a year! This is my second Athlete of the Year Award this year, the first one last June from the City of Manila. What can I say?
“It is truly humbling, heart-warming and inspirational. I promise to always give my best, for the country, for the sport, for the youth. For this award, thank you again, Esquire.”
Esquire commented: “Obiena has all but cemented his legacy in Philippine sports, but the history books will remember him for more than just his records, medals, and trophies—they’ll remember him for his grit and determination to overcome the struggles that were designed to drag him down.”
Man At His Best is Esquire's annual celebration that honors the life and work of inspiring men and women throughout the year.
In the latest World Athletics rankings, dated November 22, Obiena is ranked third in the world behind Armand Duplantis (Sweden) and Christopher Nilsen (USA).
