OCA congratulates Tayyab Ikram on election as new FIH President

Kuwait City, Kuwait, November 6, 2022: The Olympic Council of Asia has congratulated Tayyab Ikram on his election as President of the International Hockey Federation (FIH).

Tayyab (Macau, China) is Deputy Chair of the OCA Athletes’ Committee and is a popular figure on the Olympic circuit in Asia.

“The Olympic Council of Asia is extremely proud and honoured to note that our good friend Mr Tayyab Ikram has been elected as new President of the International Hockey Federation,” the OCA said.

“Tayyab has been a tireless worker and an inspirational leader of the Olympic sports movement in Asia for many years, not only in hockey.

“He always puts athletes first in all his work and makes sure the rights of athletes are protected throughout the Olympic movement.

“Tayyab’s election as President of one of the biggest International Federations in sport is a fitting reward for his dedication and his outstanding service over many years.

“The OCA will support him in his efforts and wishes him all success in this new, highly prestigious position at the top of the Olympic movement,” the OCA added.

Tayyab was elected as new President of the FIH by the 48th FIH Congress in Lausanne, Switzerland, on Saturday, November 5.

Of the 126 votes submitted by the member National Associations, Tayyab attained the required absolute majority of more than half the votes, receiving 79 votes to the 47 given to Marc Coudron (BEL).

The duration of the term of the new FIH President will be of two years in order to complete the mandate of previous FIH President Dr Narinder Dhruv Batra, who resigned on 18 July.

“Hockey is my passion. Hockey has changed my life and I’m thankful to hockey and the hockey family for this. I express my gratitude to all of you for the confidence you’ve given me today. I promise you that I will carry the message of solidarity and bring the FIH together,” Tayyab said.

Tayyab is Chief Executive of the Asian Hockey Federation.
