Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia, November 2, 2022: The Olympic Council of Malaysia’s message of congratulations to badminton champions Pearly Tan and Thinaah Muralitharan has proved to be a smash hit on social media.
The women’s doubles duo made history by winning the French Open at the Stade Pierre de Coubertin in Paris on Sunday, October 30.
The world’s 11th-ranked pair defeated two-time world champions Mayu Matsumoto-Wakana Nagahara of Japan 21-19, 18-21, 21-15 in a pulsating final, making them the first Malaysian women’s pair to win the French Open.
“Congratulations! Pearly Tan-M Thinaah's partnership made national badminton history,” the OCM said in a Facebook post with the message Tahniah! (congratulations).
Proud Malaysians rallied around the success, with the post attracting 41,000 “likes”, over 3,100 comments and 953 shares, proving the continued popularity of badminton in the country.
Their victory in Paris was their second championship title and their biggest success on the Badminton World Federation (BWF) World Tour series after winning the Swiss Open in March last year.
