Kazakhstan secures record number of IOC Olympic scholarships for Paris 2024

Nur-Sultan, Kazakhstan, October 17, 2022: The National Olympic Committee of Kazakhstan has received 32 individual scholarships and wo team scholarships under the IOC Olympic Solidarity Programme for athletes to prepare for the Paris 2024 Olympic Games.

A total of 32 scholarships were distributed in 16 individual sports – 19 for men and 13 for women. The scholarships were given for wrestling (6) boxing (4), judo (3), weightlifting (3), athletics (2), gymnastics (2), tennis (2), shooting (2), and one each for breaking, cycling, canoeing, swimming, table tennis, sport climbing, archery and taekwondo.

Two team sports also received support with scholarships being given for the men’s water polo team and the women’s handball team.

All candidates were submitted to the Kazakhstan NOC by the national federations. The main criteria for selection were results as well as the prospect of winning medals.

In comparison, Kazakhstan received 24 International Olympic Committee scholarships in 13 sports for the Tokyo 2020 Olympics, and 25 scholarships in 12 sports for the Rio 2016 Olympics.

As such, the NOC has successfully increased the total number of scholarships received for the next Olympic Games as well as expanded the number of sports.

Since 2015, the IOC has allocated 110 Olympic scholarships to athletes from Kazakhstan, including backing for the Winter Olympics. Kazakhstan is one of the leading nations participating in the IOC Solidarity programme in Asia.
