Kuwait, January 12, 2020: The Olympic Council of Asia has expressed its deepest condolence to the Oman Olympic Committee on the passing of the visionary ruler, Sultan Qaboos bin Said Al Said.
His Majesty Sultan Qaboos passed away on Friday at the age of 79 after ruling Oman for five decades and the Omani government declared three days of national mourning.
“The Olympic Council of Asia is very saddened by the loss of a truly great leader, Sultan Qaboos bin Said Al Said,” said the OCA President, Sheikh Ahmad Al Fahad Al Sabah.
“Under the rule of His Majesty Sultan Qaboos, Oman grew and prospered thanks to his leadership and his devotion to his people in all aspects of life.
“We would like to extend our deepest condolence to our friends in the Oman Olympic Committee at this time of grief and national mourning.”
Sheikh Ahmad said Sultan Qaboos was devoted to the development of sport in Oman and in particular to the role of women in sport.
“We will never forget the support we received in hosting our second Asian Beach Games in the beautiful capital city of Muscat in 2010,” added Sheikh Ahmad.
“This was a truly memorable occasion and showcased the natural beauty of Oman and also the kindness and generosity of the people – qualities which had been instilled and cherished by Sultan Qaboos.
“Everybody who attended those beach games left Oman with lasting memories of a peaceful, modern and friendly country, and this is all down to the benevolent leadership of Sultan Qaboos over many years.
“The Olympic Movement in Asia is mourning the passing of this inspiring leader and shares the grief around the world.”
