Pakistan hockey legend Manzoor Hussain Junior passes away

Lahore, Pakistan, August 29, 2022: Former Pakistan hockey captain Manzoor Hussain Junior passed away due to a heart attack on Monday, August 29. He was 63.

Manzoor Junior was part of the Pakistan team that won the bronze medal at the 1976 Montreal Olympics. Eight years later he captained the national team that won the gold medal at the 1984 Los Angeles Olympics.

A fearsome forward, he also helped Pakistan win gold titles at the 1978 and 1982 Hockey World Cups, the 1978 and 1982 Asian Games, the 1982 Asia Cup, and 1978 and 1979 Champions Trophy.

Offering words of condolences, the President of the Asian Hockey Federation, Fumio Ogura, said: “It is very saddening to learn of this loss. I will pray for the departed and also that his family find solace in this tough time.”

AHF Chief Executive and Secretary General Dato Tayyab Ikram said: “It is immensely saddening news for me. I have always been an admirer of Mr. Manzoor’s contributions and services to hockey. Indeed, the hockey family has lost an asset today and it is a great loss for the Asian hockey family.”

Manzoor was capped 175 times and scored 86 goals. He was known for his exceptional stick work, and one of his remarkable displays was in the 1982 World Cup final where he scored a goal by beating six German defenders.
