Birmingham, United States, July 19, 2022: Japan finished as the top-ranked Asian nation at The World Games 2022 in Birmingham, Alabama, which drew to an end on Sunday, July 17.
Japan, who fielded a squad of 138 athletes, finished eighth in the overall medal standings with a tally of 33 medals comprised of 10 gold, 11 silver and 12 bronze medals.
China, who will host the 12th World Games in 2025 in Chengdu, was the only other Asian nation to break into the top 10, finishing 10th in the standings with a tally of 14 medals - nine gold, four silver and one bronze.
Germany finished as the number one team with 47 medals (24-7-16) followed by hosts United States (16-18-10) and Ukraine in third place (16-12-17).
Four of Japan’s 10 gold medals came in the country’s traditional sport sumo while powerlifting garnered two golds. The other gold medals were won in dance sports breaking, karate, sport climbing and waterski & wakeboard.
China’s nine golds were won in finswimming (five) and wushu (four).
Other than the two Asian sporting powerhouses, Thailand was the next best finishing 18th overall with nine medals including four golds won in jiu-jitsu (two) and muaythai (two).
