Lausanne, Switzerland, January 7, 2020: Two hundred runners, 20.2km through the streets of the city…..on Wednesday, January 8, the Olympic capital will experience a great moment in its history during the final relay of the Lausanne 2020 Youth Olympic Flame.
This symbolic and traditional event will be the last public appearance of the Olympic flame before the lighting of the Olympic cauldron the following day during the Opening Ceremony - which will mark the official opening of the 3rd Winter YOG.
On Wednesday, the people of Switzerland, French-speaking Switzerland (“Romandie”), the canton of Vaud and Lausanne will be called upon to celebrate the 200 runners who will relay the Lausanne 2020 Youth Olympic torch in the streets of the Olympic capital.
This relay, an Olympic tradition dating back almost a century and a universal symbol of peace and unity, will mark the end of the journey of the flame, which has crossed all of Switzerland since September 19, the day after its traditional lighting in Athens, Greece.
The relay will take place in two phases, on two distinct routes, the first down town in the morning and the other in the city centre in the afternoon.
The 200 runners have been selected from among the sports associations and clubs in the canton of Vaud as well as schools, colleges and academic institutions that have contributed to the organisation of Lausanne 2020.
