Baghdad, Iraq, July 7, 2022: The President of the National Olympic Committee of Iraq, Raad Hammoudi, has praised the Arab Gulf Cup Football Federation (AGCFF) for its decision to confirm the southern city of Basra as host of the 25th Gulf Cup.
At an executive committee meeting of the AGCFF in Doha, Qatar last week - chaired by President Sheikh Hamad bin Khalifa bin Ahmed Al Thani - a report of the inspection committee following a recent visit to Basra was taken up.
After reviewing the report, the executive committee confirmed Basra as the host of the tournament which will be held from January 6-19, 2023.
The Iraq NOC President expressed happiness at the decision and congratulated the Iraq Football Association which has been waiting a long time to host this event. Hammoudi also called on the Iraqi Government to ensure that all steps were taken to host a successful tournament.
Eight countries will participate in the 25th Gulf Cup. They are Bahrain, Kuwait, Qatar, Saudi Arabia, Oman, United Arab Emirates, Yemen and host Iraq.
Iraq last hosted this tournament in 1979 in Baghdad and went on to win the title.
