Tehran, Iran, July 3, 2022: Dr. Seyed Reza Salehi Amiri, President of the National Olympic Committee of the Islamic Republic of Iran, has received the London 2012 Olympics weightlifting gold medal on behalf of Iranian athlete Komeil Ghasemi in Lausanne last week.

Iranian NOC President Salehi Amiri and the country’s Minister of Sports and Youth, Dr. Seyed Hamid Sajjadi, were on a visit to Lausanne, Switzerland for several meetings with international sports federations and the International Olympic Committee.

On the sidelines of the IOC meeting, the Iran NOC President was given the long-awaited gold medal in the men’s 120kg class awarded to Ghasemi, who had originally won the bronze medal.

Iran was notified last year that the IOC had concluded their doping investigation of two Olympic wrestlers: Arthur Taymazov from Uzbekistan and Davit Modzamanashvili of Georgia, the gold and silver medallists respectively. Both wrestlers were stripped of their medals after being tested positive, and following re-testing of their samples.

With the elevation to the Olympic gold medal, freestyle wrestler Ghasemi becomes the most decorated wrestler in Iranian history. He also won a silver medal at the Rio 2016 Olympics and a silver at the 2014 World Championships in Tashkent, Uzbekistan. Ghasemi also has a gold and two silver medals from Asian Championships.
