Hong Kong Sports Institute’s 30th anniversary tour reaches final stop

Hong Kong, China, June 26, 2022: Hong Kong fencer and Olympian Cheung Siu-lun joined Hong Kong rugby team players Yiu Kam-shing, Lee Ka-to and Chong Ka-yan at the Hong Kong Sports Institute’s 30th anniversary roving exhibition and athlete sharing session at Lok Fu Place on Sunday, June 26.

The six-week exhibition is one of the highlights of the HKSI’s 30th anniversary celebrations. This is the final week for the public to visit the roving exhibition at the third and final stop, which will run until July 3.

It allows the public to better understand the work of Hong Kong’s elite athlete training centre - located at Shatin in the New Territories - and have a glimpse of the key achievements of the SAR’s elite athletes over the past 30 years through panels, exhibit displays and interactive games.

At Lok Fu Place on Sunday, trailblazing Hong Kong fencer Cheung Siu-lun spoke about the HKSI’s role in supporting him throughout his attempts to qualify for the 2012 and 2016 Olympic Games before achieving the feat in both individual and team events at Tokyo 2020.

“I have been an elite fencer for over 17 years, and the HKSI has become a large part of my life,” he said.

“I have witnessed the tremendous improvement in facilities, sports science support, as well as financial and lifestyle support for elite athletes. Our athletes’ performances and competitiveness on the global stage has improved a lot, too. Hong Kong team’s extraordinary result from Tokyo 2020 says it all.”

Hong Kong rugby team players Yiu Kam-shing, Lee Ka-to and Chong Ka-yan joined the Athlete Sharing Session after returning from a successful two-month training and competition tour at the United Kingdom and Portugal.

The men’s rugby sevens team - Asian Games champions in 2018 - reached all three cup finals on their tour, winning a gold and two silver, while the women’s team finished with a silver and two bronze from the three events.
