Iraqi Mohammed Jalood elected new IWF President

Tirana, Albania, June 25, 2022: Mohammed Jalood of Iraq was elected as the new President of the International Weightlifting Federation at the IWF Special and Electoral Congress in Tirana, Albania on Saturday, June 25.

“President Jalood brings extensive experience within the sport, having been a weightlifting athlete for 13 years, working within the administration for 26 years and spending the last five as IWF General Secretary,” the IWF said in a statement.

Upon his election he thanked the weightlifting family and out-going Interim President Dr. Michael Irani (GBR) for all the good work. 

Jalood, 60, said: “I would like to thank the weightlifting family for all the good work done together over the years. But especially my good friend Mohamed Yousef Al-Mana who withdrew his candidacy to unite the IWF family. 

“Looking ahead, we have a lot of good work to do and we are all committed to the same goal. Today, we have taken the first step in building a stronger organization, one that is more resilient and more ambitious. 

“Today is a bright day for our sport and I look forward to doing many more good things for our organization together with the entire weightlifting family.”

*Dr. Michael Irani was made Honorary President for his outstanding contribution. 

*The newly elected IWF General Secretary Treasurer is José Carlos Quinones Gonzalez from Peru.

*The IWF also announced the newly elected Vice Presidents: 1st Vice President, Ursula Papandrea (USA); Vice Presidents, Doris Marrero (VEN), Attila Ádámfi (HUN), Petr Krol (CZE) and Pyrros Dimas (GRE).

*The first day of the 2022 IWF Electoral Congress concluded with the election of 10 new Executive Board members: Florian SPERL, Tom LIAW, Mohammed Ahmed ALHARBI, Hiromi MIYAKE, Matthew CURTAIN, Wen Hsin CHANG, Fathi MASMOUDI, Yassiny ESQUIVEL, Gardencia DU PLOOY, Salvatore COFFA.

*The new IWF Hall of Fame inductees are: Doris Marrero (VEN), Khaled Mehalhel (LBA) and Monico Puentevella (PHI).
