Cycling rally marks Olympic Day in Iraq

Baghdad, Iraq, June 23, 2022: The National Olympic Committee of Iraq held a sports carnival on the occasion of World Olympic Day on Thursday, June 23 in the presence of the NOC President, Mr. Raad Hammoudi.

The President was joined by other members of the executive office as well as presidents and representatives of national sports associations.

The festivities began with the arrival of Baghdad's cycling team who participated in a 150-strong rally from Beirut Square to the headquarters of the Olympic Committee on Palestine Street.

Participants carried Iraqi flags, the flags of the Iraqi National Olympic Committee and the International Olympic Committee, and their slogan dedicated to this year's celebration with the theme “Move for Peace”.

The President of the Olympic Committee congratulated all athletes and staff and praised the efforts of everyone who contributed to the success of this carnival. He said it confirmed that Iraq was very much a part of the International Olympic Movement and was committed to this global occasion.

Hammoudi told the participants that Olympic sport had become a fundamental part of society and humanity and was also related to the environment, health and social discipline, as well as contributing towards tolerance and understanding between nations.
