Hong Kong, China NOC launches 2022 Olympic Day Virtual Run

Hong Kong, China, June 23, 2022: The Sports Federation & Olympic Committee of Hong Kong, China held a kick-off ceremony for the 2022 Olympic Day Virtual Run at Olympic House in Causeway Bay on Thursday, June 23.

With Hong Kong still affected by the pandemic, the Olympic Committee decided to hold a virtual run for the first time with the theme “Run with Hong Kong athletes”.

Participants can register from June 24 to July 22 and can join the virtual run from July 1-30.

The officiating guests at the launch ceremony were Mr. Tong Wai Lun, Vice President of SF&OC and Chair of the Olympic Day Organising Committee, Mr. Vincent Liu Ming Kwong, Director of Leisure & Cultural Services, and Ms. Yang Xue, Chief Culture Officer of Industrial and Commercial Bank of China (Asia) Limited.

The SF&OC has been celebrating Olympic Day since 1987 and this year’s edition has been designated an official part of the 25th anniversary of the establishment of the Special Administrative Region on July 1, 1997.

There are three designated routes on Hong Kong Island (3.4km), Kowloon (2.6km) and the New Territories (7.1km).

Mr. Tong said: “The Virtual Run echoes the three pillars of ‘Move, Learn and Discover’ set out by IOC, and practises the new pillar of ‘Together, for a better world’. Public participation in running can share the positive energy of sports via their social platforms and create a better world through sport.

“On the other hand, to continue our support for Hong Kong athletes after the Tokyo 2020 Olympic Games, the theme of the Virtual Run is ‘Run with HK Athletes’ - we will always be with our athletes from different competitions and cheer them on.”

Four summer and winter Olympians attended the kick-off ceremony and shared their experiences: Cheung Siu Lun (fencing), Sidney K Chu (short track speed skating), Audrey Alice King (alpine skiing) and Reginald Li Chun Hei (badminton).
