Baghdad, Iraq, June 12, 2022: The President of the National Olympic Committee of Iraq, Raad Hammoudi, has offered his sincere condolences to the sports and football community on the death of Moayad Al Badri.
Al Badri, who was a popular personality in football and in the sports scene for many decades, died on Saturday in the United States. He was 88.
Hammoudi described Badri as a symbol of Iraqi football and the sports media industry as well as being a prominent figure in Arabic football commentary. He also praised his administrative, media and academic services to Iraq and the Arab and Asian football scene.
“The late Badri played the role of a father, educator and mentor to many generations of football players of clubs and national teams,” said the Iraq NOC President.
“He had worked in the football field for about 60 years, teaching football at the Baghdad University of Physical Education and Sports Sciences. He also served as president of the Football Association and held many local, Arab and Asian football positions.
“He also stood out in the field of media as he presented a weekly sports programme since the sixties which established him as a leader in the Iraqi sports media on television.”
The Iraqi News Agency reported that Al Badri held several high-level positions, including treasurer of the Iraqi Football Association, director general of school sports 1962-1984, director of sports in the Ministry of Youth 1962-1984, professor at the College of Physical Education, University of Baghdad, secretary of the Iraqi FA 1970-1977 and president of the FA in 1977, 1980 and 1988.
The Iraqi Football Association said the passing of Al Badri was “a great and irreplaceable loss. Al Badri was the teacher of generations and the owner of bright sports ideas in all positions.”
