Singapore NOC opens nominations for athletes’ commission

Singapore, June 11, 2022: The Singapore National Olympic Council has announced that nominations for the election of the SNOC Athletes’ Commission for the term 2022-2026 term are now open until June 24.

The list of the candidates seeking election will be published on the SNOC website on July 1. Athletes who have participated in the Hanoi 2021 SEA Games can vote from July 1-8. The elected members will be announced no earlier than July 15.

The SNOC stated the terms of reference for the SNOC Athletes’ Commission:

1. Mission. The mission of the SNOC Athletes’ Commission is to represent the views of Singapore’s athletes within the SNOC.

2. Objectives: To consider all questions and matters related to athletes and to advise the SNOC Executive Committee; to represent the rights and interests of athletes and to make related recommendations; to serve as a voice for athletes or their organisations (for example the local chapter of the World Olympians Association) in the SNOC Executive Committee; to advise and assist the SNOC Executive Committee and its sub-committees in promoting Olympism, sporting excellence, fair play and athlete development; to maintain contact with the IOC Athletes’ Commission.

3. Composition: The SNOC Athletes’ Commission shall comprise a Chair Person, Vice Chair Person, Honorary Secretary and between two and seven other members. There shall be a minimum of five members in total. The Chair Person should be a member of the previous commission to carry on the goals and objectives of the previous commission, if and where necessary.

All members (other than the founding members) are to be nominated by the National Sports Association through election by their peers, and appointed by the SNOC Executive Committee.

To be eligible for nomination and appointment to the Athletes’ Commission, the candidate must be at least 16 years of age, be a Singaporean, must not have a criminal record and must have participated in at least one of the major Games: Olympic, Asian, Commonwealth or Southeast Asian Games.
