Thimphu, Bhutan, June 1, 2022: Bhutan Olympic Committee took the opportunity of Olympic Day 2022 to introduce youngsters to a wide variety of sports on May 28.
The Olympic Day celebrations took place at Chundu Armed Forces Public School, Haa Dzongkhag, and included several sports and educational events under the theme of “Together for a Peaceful World”.
There was also a “Meet the Sports Stars” activity to promote the Kingdom’s leading athletes to a new generation of fans.
From toddlers to teens, the children embraced the likes of football, basketball, boxing, shooting, archery, athletics, badminton, softball, baseball and the new sport of teqball under the guidance of experienced coaches and instructors.
Almost a thousand participants including students, teachers and villagers took part in the day-long Olympic Day celebration.
BOC Secretary General Sonam Karma Tshering said: “It is the hope of the BOC that such events will open a new era for national sports and raise national participation to new levels, benefitting our youth, as well as sports enthusiasts around the country.”
A BOC official said the national sports federations and associations intended to engage as many kids as possible with the Olympic Day pillars of “move, learn and discover.”
International Olympic Day falls on June 23 but was brought forward to May 28 in Bhutan to avoid inconveniences caused by the monsoon season.
