Kuwait City, Kuwait, May 16, 2022: It was the easiest of outings for Samar Mansouri as she won Qatar’s first gold medal at the 3rd GCC (Gulf Cooperation Council) Games Kuwait 2022 on the opening day of action on Monday, May 16.
Mansouri claimed the gold medal in the women’s pole vault event with an effort of 3.40 metres. Her name was the only one on the official result sheet as there were only two competitors in this event. The other entry, Kuwaiti Hibah Al Farhan, registered a ‘NM’ or ‘No Mark’ against her name.
“Even under these circumstances - only two of us - I’m happy to have won a gold medal for Team Qatar. This is the first gold for Qatar at these Games and I hope we can win more,” said Mansouri.
It was an early birthday present for the Doha pole-vaulter – on May 26, she turns 19.
Qatar had five female athletes in action on the first day of the athletic competition. Teenager Mansouri was the only one to finish on the podium, and she loved it, even if she was the only one standing.
