Doha, Qatar, May 15, 2022: The President of the Qatar Olympic Committee, H.E. Sheikh Joaan bin Hamad Al-Thani, presented Qatari high jumper Mutaz Essa Barshim with his upgraded silver medal from the 2012 London Olympics on the sidelines of the Ooredoo Doha Meeting on Friday, May 13.

Barshim’s bronze medal from London 2012 was upgraded to a silver medal after the International Olympic Committee stripped Russian Ivan Ukhov of his gold medal last November due to his involvement in a state-backed steroid doping programme.

Ukhov was banned for four years in 2019 by the Court of Arbitration for Sport. The Russian appealed this ruling, but failed to overturn the CAS decision.

Barshim won the gold medal at the Tokyo 2020 Olympics tying for first spot with Italy’s Gianmarco Tamberi. The two could not be split at last year’s Games and ultimately agreed to share the title after they both cleared 2.37 metres.

At the London Olympics, Barshim jumped 2.29m.
