GCC Games to feature female athletes for first time

Kuwait City, Kuwait, May 2, 2022: The President of the Kuwait Olympic Committee, Sheikh Fahad Nasser Sabah Al-Ahmad Al-Sabah, has announced that female athletes will compete for the first time at the GCC Games (Gulf Cooperation Council) to be hosted by Kuwait later this month.

Sheikh Fahad, who is also the Vice Chairman of the Organising Committee, revealed the showpiece - held under the patronage of the Emir, His Highness Sheikh Nawaf Al-Ahmad Al-Jaber Al-Sabah - will include female athletes in this third edition.

Six countries – Bahrain, Oman, Qatar, Saudi Arabia, United Arab Emirates and hosts Kuwait - will take part in the GCC Games from May 13-31, and all of them will field female athletes in their contingents.

A total of more than 1,500 athletes and 500 officials will participate in 16 sports. The sports are athletics, basketball (5x5 and 3x3), cycling, esports, futsal, fencing, handball, ice hockey, judo, karate, padel, shooting, swimming, table tennis, tennis and volleyball.

“This is the biggest sporting event to be hosted by Kuwait and for the first time in the history of the GCC Games, and in line with international standards, female athletes will participate. They will take part in six of the 16 sports,” noted the President of the Kuwait Olympic Committee.

The six sports involving female athletes are athletics, basketball (3x3), cycling, futsal, esports and padel.

“I’m very happy to welcome all the athletes from the Gulf nations to Kuwait and I wish these Games and all the delegations success,” Sheikh Fahad added.
