Kathmandu, Nepal, April 27, 2022: Nepal will participate in 23 sports at the 19th Asian Games in Hangzhou, China from September 10-25.
The 112th board meeting of the National Sports Council of Nepal, chaired by Minister of Youth and Sports Maheshwor Jung Gahatraj, decided the number of sports and disciplines including omen’s football and women’s volleyball for the first time at the Asian Games.
Nepal is expected to field a contingent of around 150 athletes, 28 coaches and 20 managers, along with officials. NSC member secretary Tanka Lal Ghising revealed that the sports were picked on the basis of athletes’ performances at previous Asian Games and recent success at national and international level.
The other sports Nepal will enter in Hangzhou are archery, athletics, badminton, basketball, boxing, cricket, cycling, fencing, golf, handball, judo, kabaddi, karate, shooting, swimming, table tennis, taekwondo, triathlon, weightlifting, wrestling and wushu.
In team sports, only female athletes will compete in football, kabaddi, handball and volleyball. The men’s team will compete in T20 cricket.
The Hangzhou Asian Games will feature 40 sports, 61 disciplines and 482 events.
Nepal competed in 29 sports at the 2018 Asian Games in Jakarta and Palembang winning just one silver medal in paragliding.
The NSC also decided that there will be 38 sports, including two demonstration disciplines – shot put and canyoning – at the Ninth National Games to be held in Gandaki Province from June 5-11.
