Thimphu, Bhutan, April 24, 2022: The Bhutan Olympic Committee has signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with the Chundu Armed Forces Public School and the Bhutan Boxing Federation to introduce a sports talent development programme in the school.
The main aim of the project is to provide the students at the Chundu Armed Forces Public School in the Haa District an opportunity to participate - and possibly excel - in sports, while simultaneously pursuing their academic aspirations.
Under this initiative the school is envisioned to become a sports talent development hub for gifted young student athletes. For the 2022 academic year, 14 young boxers have enrolled in the programme.
During the MoU signing ceremony, all three organisations expressed their interest to introduce other sports in the school, so as to offer a wide array of choices.
BOC Secretary General Sonam Karma Tshering shared that this first-of-a-kind initiative would create a viable platform for young student athletes to participate and shine in both academics and sports, thereby providing them with an additional opportunity to excel in life.
He said the project would help the school become a hub for sports talent development and also assist National Sports Federations in developing youth talent in the country.
The President of the Bhutan Boxing Federation, Col. Rinzin Dorjin, said: “Bhutanese youth everywhere excelled in sports at the school level but were unable to build upon that at national and international level.
"With the introduction of this project into the Bhutanese school system and the clear development pathway provided, the Federation is confident that many of these students will go on to represent and win medals for our country.”
