Lausanne, Switzerland, April 24, 2022: Afghanistan’s IOC member, Samira Asghari, has thanked the Olympic Council of Asia for their long and steadfast support of the Olympic movement in her home country.
In a Facebook post on April 22, Samira said that, without the support of the International Olympic Committee and OCA, Afghanistan would not be able to maintain the presence of the Afghan youth and people on the international stage during the country’s turbulent recent history and economic crisis.
“The IOC (International Olympic Committee) and OCA (Olympic Council of Asia) have been the main supporters of Afghanistan’s youth over the past decade,” she posted.
“Trusting, believing the strength of Afghan youth leads to a committed generation when we needed it the most.
“We stand committed to and protective of this deep relationship to make a better world through sport.”
Samira, 28, became an IOC member in 2018 after a sports career in which she captained the women’s national basketball team and also played football and martial arts.
She is a member of the following IOC Commissions: Athletes’ Entourage (2014-present); Coordination of the Games of the XXXIV Olympiad Los Angeles 2028 (2019-present); Coordination for the 4th Winter Youth Olympic Games Gangwon 2024 (2020-present); and Future Host Commission for the Olympic Winter Games (2019-present).
