Qatar shooting sport competition attracts over 500 participants

Doha, Qatar, April 18, 2022: Qatar is hoping to unearth some new shooting talent while promoting the sport in general through the fourth edition of the 2022 Nishan Vodafone Ramadan Tournament and Festival.

The event, for professionals and amateurs, is being held under the patronage of the Qatar Olympic Committee President, His Excellency Sheikh Joaan bin Hamad Al Thani, and is taking place at the Lusail Shooting Range from April 3-19.

It has attracted more than 500 participants, including elite athletes, citizens, residents, families and children as the public has embraced the “sport for all” atmosphere. The four categories are shotgun, pistol, rifle and archery.

The tournament aims to discover the most talented athletes in the sport, develop their skills and help clubs and national teams raise their level, while promoting the sport and increasing the number of enthusiasts each year.

The opening ceremony on Monday, April 11 was attended by the QOC Secretary General, H.E. Jassim bin Rashid Al Buenain, H.E. Commander of Qatar Amiri Air Force Major General (Pilot) Jassim bin Mohammed Al Mannai, H.E. Commander of the Joint Special Forces, Staff Brigadier General Jassim bin Ali Al Attiyah, Mazzraty (NGA) Farm executive board member Mr. Saad bin Mohammed Al Mane and the President of the Qatar Shooting and Archery Association, Meshaal Ibrahim Al Nasr, along with a number of other senior sport personalities. 

The Tournament Director and Assistant Secretary General of the Qatar Shooting and Archery Association, Mr. Abdulaziz Mohammed Al Tamimi, said: “This edition is an exceptional one and record-breaking in terms of the number of participants, with 500 competitors in both the amateur and professional events.”

Sheikh Mohammed bin Salman Al Thani, head of the tournament’s technical committee, lauded the significant turnout from citizens and residents.

“We are truly surprised at the high technical performance shown by the amateurs, whose results were best than some professionals. We expect the performances to rise and we can see new records later.”
