Jakarta, Indonesia, April 11, 2022: Indonesia NOC has announced that it will send a 738-strong delegation to the 31st South East Asian (SEA) Games in Vietnam from May 12-23.
The delegation will comprise 476 athletes, 207 team officials and 55 headquarters staff for the 40 sports and 526 events.
According to the Minister of Youth and Sports, Zainudin Amali, the selection of sports was based on two criteria, namely the chance to win medals and the development of young athletes.
The selection process was led by the Ministry's Monitoring and Evaluation Team (MONEV) headed by Professor Moch. Asnawi. The team analysed data provided by sports stakeholders in Indonesia, including from the National Olympic Committee’s Sports Development Commission.
"This is a result of our review process involving all sports stakeholders. I apologise to those sports that did not make the cut. Still, our aim is the Olympics, and the SEA Games is an opportunity to reach the next level," said Zainudin said.
"I hope this radical change will boost our achievements. This selection is not based on negotiations but on measurable, quantifiable data and merit. Sixty percent of the team will be junior athletes, and the rest are experienced. This is to create a tiered structure," added Zainudin.
Indonesia will compete in the following sports: archery, artistic gymnastics, athletics, badminton, canoeing, cycling, karate, pencak silat, rowing, shooting, swimming, taekwondo, weightlifting, wushu, canoeing, basketball, beach volleyball, bowling, boxing, chess, diving, esports, fencing, men's football, golf, volleyball, jiujitsu, kickboxing, sepak takraw, tennis, triathlon, vovinam and wrestling.
Indonesia will be led by Chef de Mission Ferry Kono and assisted by Ade Lukman (Vice CDM), Teuku Arlan Perkasa Lukman (Deputy I) and Zaenal Asikin (Deputy II).
Ferry, also NOC Indonesia's Secretary-General, is grateful that the Ministry accepted NOC's suggestion to participate in the upcoming SEA Games as a form of solidarity with other ASEAN countries. This year's SEA Games were initially not included in the Ministry's planning. It was only green-lighted last December.
"This is an extraordinary SEA Games. After the SEA Games received the green light, NOC Indonesia immediately coordinated with the Ministry of Youth and Sports. We also coordinated with all National Federations through the Sports Development Commission. We mapped out all the data and potential for medals. We also considered the potential of young athletes," added Ferry.
"In the NOC's Executive Committee meeting, we agreed that the team for the SEA Games must be sleek and efficient.”
