Qatar weightlifter Fares Ibrahim wins two golds and Tokyo Olympics berth

Doha, Qatar, December 23, 2019: Qatar’s Fares Ibrahim earned his ticket to Tokyo 2020 Olympics as he bagged two gold medals at the Qatar International Cup Weightlifting Championships last week. Fares, who is a junior world champion and a world silver medallist at the senior level, won the 96kg class at the Radisson Blu Hotel in Doha, much to the delight of home fans. Winner of a silver medal at the 2018 Asian Games silver medallist in the 94kg category, Fares lifted 228kg in the clean and jerk and 404kg in total to grab both gold medals, and also secure his spot at the Tokyo Olympics. “I am very happy with my effort,” said Fares, who finished seventh at the Rio Olympics as an 18-year-old. “I was very young when I took part in my first Olympics but now, I am more experienced and much more confident. Hopefully I can win a medal in Tokyo next year,” Fares was quoted by the Gulf Times. Iran’s Kianouch Rostami finished second while his compatriot Ali Miri was third. Rostami won the snatch title with 178kg. Over 150 weightlifters from 42 nations took part in the sixth Qatar Cup.
