Gelephu, Bhutan, March 17, 2022: The Bhutan Olympic Committee will contribute funds towards the construction of a six-acre cricket stadium in Gelephu capable of hosting international matches.

Bhutan NOC and the Government of India have extended financial support towards the construction of the new International Cricket Stadium which will come with six natural grass pitches, two artificial turf pitches and a two-storey pavilion which can host 300 spectators.

Bhutan Cricket Council Board CEO Damber S Gurung said: “This will certainly benefit Gelephu, the economy of the district, and for the development of cricket.”

Gelephu is 240 kilometres south of the capital Thimphu.

Gurung said that the goal of the BCCB was to increase the number of players and competitions. “We have limited resources and we have to use them properly. Prioritising development activities, infrastructure, player development and many other areas are important aspects of Bhutan Cricket.”

At present, the country has one cricket pitch in the capital Thimphu.

“If we provide top coaches, facilities, equipment and financial support, it will not take long to win international tournaments,” Gurung added.

In the last two years, Bhutan has participated in only one international tournament.

In 2022, there are a couple of tournaments for the under-19 boys and girls national teams as well as an international T20 event for the senior squad.
