Sheikh Joaan leads celebrations to mark 43rd anniversary of Qatar Olympic Committee

Doha, Qatar, March 15, 2022: The Qatar Olympic Committee celebrated its 43rd anniversary on Monday, March 14, with a "History and Achievement" ceremony with QOC President H.E. Sheikh Joaan bin Hamad Al-Thani in attendance.

Founded on March 14, 1979, the Qatar Olympic Committee has played an important role in raising sports awareness in the nation and developing the Olympic Movement in accordance with the Olympic Charter. As a result, sport in Qatar has reached new heights.

Among the huge number of achievements are the two gold medals and one bronze medal Team Qatar athletes won at the Tokyo 2020 Olympics – golds for high-jumper Mutaz Essa Barshim and weightlifter Fares Ibrahim E.H. Elbakh and a bronze for beach volleyball duo Cherif Younousse and Ahmed Tijan.

The Qatari capital Doha has also hosted and delivered many major sports events to become the sports capital of the region in line with the QOC vision “to become a leading nation in bringing the world together through sustainable sports development”.

Secretary General H.E. Jassim bin Rashid Al-Buenain reaffirmed that the QOC is keen, as per directives of its President Sheikh Joaan, to improve QOC’s internal structure and to create the ideal work environment in line with the Qatar 2030 National Vision.

The QOC honoured its long serving employees as well as graduates of training courses during the ceremony on Monday.

Secretary General Al-Buenain thanked the QOC employees for their efforts noting that they were the driving force behind all accomplishments the QOC has achieved over the past 43 years.

Mrs. Maryam Mohamed Al-Kuwari, Director of the QOC Human Resources and Administrative Affairs Department, said that developing employees was a priority of the QOC.

Al-Kuwari also thanked QOC President Sheikh Joaan for his commitment to develop and improve the work environment at the QOC, and the results were there for all to see.
