Dubai, United Arab Emirates, March 10, 2022: The Chair of the Olympic Council of Asia’s Athletes’ Committee, Mikako Kotani, delivered a video address as part of International Women’s Day celebrations in the United Arab Emirates.
Olympian Kotani, who won two bronze medals for Japan in synchronized swimming at the 1988 Seoul Olympics, spoke of the importance of women’s leadership in the organising committee of the Tokyo 2020 Olympic Games last summer.
She also congratulated the UAE National Olympic Committee and National Sports Associations on their efforts to include female administrators and leaders in the Olympic movement in the Emirates.
UAE NOC organised a series of events under the leadership of Eng. Azza bint Suleiman, Assistant Secretary General for Administrative and Financial Affairs, who highlighted the prominent role of female sports leaders in the development of the Olympic sports movement.
This has led to the appointment of female leaders of three National Associations – badminton, modern pentathlon and netball – thereby promoting the empowerment of women in sport and providing opportunities to excel.
The event was held at Expo 2020 Dubai in association with the Ministry of the Interior.
