QOC celebrates Qatar’s inspiring female personalities on International Women’s Day

Doha, Qatar, March 9, 2022: The Qatar Olympic Committee celebrated International Women's Day by rolling out its week-long “Super Women” campaign highlighting the achievements of inspiring female personalities in Qatar.

In addition, Team Qatar female athletes participated in Qatar Foundation’s International Women’s Day “Run the World” event that took place in Oxygen Park.

The "Super Women" campaign celebrates women’s achievements and aims to inspire people of all ages and genders by showcasing the experiences and success stories of women in Qatar. The campaign also focuses on generations of Qatari women and takes a deep dive into their memories of work, sport and the mentors that played an integral part in their careers.

QOC President HE Sheikh Joaan bin Hamad Al Thani said: "We are proud of the achievements we made in supporting women in sports, but we look forward to more. There are so many inspiring examples of female athletes in Qatar who have reached the top and it is important they are celebrated and that we pave the way for more to follow in their footsteps.”

Sheikha Asma Al Thani, Director of Marketing and Communication at QOC, stated: "Qatari women have achieved remarkable successes and have their voices heard not only in sports but also in other sectors such as politics, culture, arts and media.

“But we still have a long way to go in our journey to support development in Qatar as we believe that the responsibility lies in the hands of both men and women.”

Sport and the importance of encouraging more Qatari girls and women to adopt a healthier and more active lifestyle were an important focus of the campaign as several female personalities joined the public in support of gender equality.

These included broadcast journalist Layla Smati, Tokyo 2020 Olympic sprinter Bashayer Al Manwari, Team Qatar 400m hurdler Maryam Fareed and Paralympic fencer Amna Al Fadala.

Qatari women achieved outstanding success in various sports on regional and international level over the past decades. The Tokyo 2020 Olympic Games saw the participation of Qatari female athletes in rowing and athletics.

The amazing results by women in sport in Qatar do not stop there. HE Sheikha Hind bint Hamad Al Thani completed the world’s biggest triathlon in Hamburg, Germany while Sheikha Al Hanouf Al Thani was also successful in realising another Qatari dream in marathon.
