Gerlits wins Kazakhstan's first medal at Winter Paralympics

Beijing, China, March 8, 2022: Alexandr Gerlits won Kazakhstan its first medal of the Beijing 2022 Winter Paralympic Games when he clinched the bronze medal in the men’s 10 kilometres, standing event in biathlon on Tuesday, March 8.

Gerlits clocked the distance in 33 minutes 06.5 seconds finishing third behind leader Canadian Mark Arendz. The Canadian para biathlon athlete won gold in a time of 31:45.2 while Ukraine’s Grygorii Vovchynskyi took home the silver in 32:18.0.

Gerlits competed in both the biathlon and cross-country skiing at the 2018 Paralympic Winter Games in PyeongChang. Before arriving in Beijing, he had stated his ambition was to win a medal at the 2022 Games, which he fulfilled on Tuesday.

Kazakhstan is fielding a small team of five male athletes at Beijing 2022 in biathlon and cross-country skiing.
