Macau to send 200 athletes to Hangzhou Asian Games

Macau, China, March 2, 2022: Macau, China is set to send around 200 athletes to the 19th Asian Games in Hangzhou, China this September.

 The President of the Sports Bureau of the Special Administrative Region (SAR) Government of Macau, China, Mr Pun Weng Kun, told local media that Macau athletes would compete in 21 sport disciplines on the programme for Hangzhou 2022.

 Pun said that the bureau would provide support for the athletes during training, hoping they would obtain a “good result” in Hangzhou. There will be 40 sports, 61 disciplines and 482 events at the 19th Asian Games, which will run from September 10-25, 2022.

 He also underlined that the bureau plans to invite branded sports events in the mainland to be hosted in Macau, adding that he hopes that this could help the city develop its sports tourism.

 Macau will also compete in the Asian Youth Games in Shantou, China this December. In related news, Secretary for Social Affairs and Culture Elsie Ao Ieong U has discussed hosting arrangements for large sporting events with the Sports Bureau.

 Ao and the Sports Bureau officials also discussed the preparations for the 15th National Games that will take place in the Greater Bay Area of Hong Kong, Macau and Guangdong province in 2025.

 Macau sports authorities are also considering adopting the closed-loop management system from the Beijing Winter Olympics in order to invite overseas drivers and teams to this year’s 69th Macau Grand Prix in November.
