Riyadh, Saudi Arabia, March 1, 2022: The Saudi Paralympics team returned home triumphant from the 3rd West Asian Para Games in Bahrain last week with a rich haul of 46 medals – 10 gold medals, 17 silver and 19 bronzes.
The Saudi squad outdid last year’s performance to finish in sixth place overall at the February 19-26 multi-sports event held in Manama.
A total of 12 countries participated with Iraq claiming top spot in the medal standings followed by the United Arab Emirates and Kuwait in second and third place respectively.
Discus thrower Hani Alnakhli, who made his international debut at the 2010 Asian Para Games in Guangzhou, led the gold rush with three gold medals while Abdulrahman Alqurashi won two gold medals in the men’s 100m and 400m (t53 category).
The Saudi Olympic and Paralympic Committee reported that the first gold medal was won by Boccia athlete Khaleel Eissa Daabal with the second gold coming from compatriot Lujain Althaqafi in the women’s BC3 category.
In team sports, Saudi Arabia won the men’s basketball silver medal. Mariam Almuraisel and Salih Alghamdi also won silver in the mixed doubles event in badminton.
