Beijing, China, February 20, 2022: Host nation China enjoyed their most successful Winter Olympics in history as 16 days of action came to a close on Sunday.

China won nine gold medals, four silver and two bronze for 15 total medals. Their previous best was five gold medals at Vancouver 2010 and 11 total medals at Vancouver 2010 and Torino 2006.

Their most successful athlete was Eileen Gu Ailing, who won two gold and one silver in freestyle skiing and became the first athlete in history at a Winter Olympics to win a medal in all three freestyle disciplines.

Up until Beijing 2022, China had won a total of 13 gold medals in eight Winter Olympics starting at Albertville 1992. Now they can add nine more to the golden collection.

Japan closed with three gold medals, six silver and nine bronze for 18 total medals – another record in beating their previous mark of 13 total medals at PyeongChang 2018.

Speed skater Miho Takagi accounted for four of Japan’s medals – one gold and three silver – at the Ice Ribbon.

Korea’s nine medals all came on the ice – five in short track speed skating and four in the speed skating oval.

Korea’s Queen of Short Track, Choi Min-jeong, won three medals – one gold and two silver.
