IOC President praises CMG broadcast coverage of Beijing 2022

Beijing, China, February 17, 2022: IOC President Thomas Bach has congratulated the China Media Group (CMG) for its contribution to the success of the broadcast coverage of the Olympic Winter Games Beijing 2022.

In a meeting with CMG President Shen Haixiong, President Bach highlighted the unprecedented audience figures that the Rights-Holding Broadcaster has been able to achieve, with more than half a billion people having already seen coverage of Beijing 2022 on CMG’s CCTV network by February 10 – less than a week into the Games.

By Friday, February 11, 2.05 billion hours of Beijing 2022 coverage had already been watched on TV in China – 15 per cent more than was viewed during the whole of PyeongChang 2018 and Sochi 2014 combined.

In recognition of these achievements, and of CMG’s long-standing partnership, President Bach also awarded CMG President Shen the IOC President’s Trophy – a contemporary sculpture created by Alexander Krivosheiw entitled “The Sky is the Limit”, which symbolises a gold medal-winning athlete’s journey to becoming a champion.

The IOC and CMG recently extended their partnership until 2032, with CMG having broadcast the Olympic Games through its agreement with the Asia Broadcast Union since the 1980s, and having first acquired rights directly from the IOC for the Olympic Games Beijing 2008.

In October last year, CMG also launched the CCTV Olympic Channel – the world's first 24/7, 4K Ultra HD sports channel – further facilitating the promotion of the Olympic Movement and the Olympic values in China, and enabling Chinese Olympic fans to engage with their favourite sports, athletes and Olympic stories all year round, 24 hours a day.
