Beijing, China, February 17, 2022: China’s Ambassador to the Philippines, Huang Xilian, has sent a congratulatory message to the country’s lone representative in the Beijing Winter Olympics, Alpine skier Asa Miller.
The Fil-Am skier from Portland, Oregon in the United States represented the Philippines – his mother is from Manila – in the men’s giant slalom and slalom.
He finished his campaign at the Yanqing National Alpine Skiing Centre on Wednesday, February 16 but again recorded a DNF (did not finish) in the slalom, the same result as the giant slalom on Sunday down the Ice River course.
To lift his spirits, Chinese Ambassador Huang wrote a congratulatory message on his Facebook page under the headline “A job well done Asa Miller”.
The message reads: “Congratulations to Filipino alpine skier Asa Miller for your amazing performance in the 2022 Beijing Olympics. With the conclusion of your Beijing Olympic tournament journey, I'm sure all the Filipino people are cheering you.
“Your impressive accomplishment as the sole representative of the Philippines in the 2022 Beijing Olympics and being part of the small number of athletes representing tropical countries and the ASEAN Region in the Winter Games stage is something to be truly proud of.
“Keep your head up high and good luck on all your future games and other endeavors. Continue to conquer the snow.”
Miller, who also competed at PyeongChang 2018, was in a field with athletes from Southeast Asian countries Thailand, Malaysia and Timor-Leste.
In an Instagram post, Miller said: “Well my second Olympics are over and things didn’t quite go my way.
“While I’m walking away without any results, I’m happy with some my skiing this week in some tough conditions. Thank you everyone for your kind words.”
