Sheikh Joaan honours Qatar’s national handball team for winning Asian crown

Doha, Qatar, February 17, 2022: The Qatar Olympic Committee President, H.E. Sheikh Joaan bin Hamad Al-Thani, honoured the Qatar national handball team in recognition of winning their fifth straight Asian Handball Championship and qualifying for the 2023 World Championship to be held in Poland and Sweden.

Sheikh Joaan felicitated the victorious Asian handball champions at a ceremony held on Wednesday, February 16. Also in attendance were the QOC second Vice President, H.E. Dr. Thani Alkuwari, QOC Secretary General, H.E. Jassim bin Rashid Al Buenain, Qatar Handball Association President Ahmed Al Sheabi and other senior officials.

Sheikh Joan congratulated Qatar’s handball team on their achievements lauding efforts made by the athletes, the federation president and all members of the administrative and technical bodies of the association. He also reaffirmed that Qatar Olympic Committee is keen to support national sports federations and to enable them to achieve more in the future.

Team Qatar was crowned Asian handball champions after beating Bahrain 29-24 in Dammam, Saudi Arabia.

With this title, Qatar have won five successive Asian tournaments – 2014, 2016, 2018, 2020 and 2022 – and equalling South Korea’s record of five straight titles in the continental event.

Team Qatar also qualified for the 2023 World Championship. It will be the ninth time Qatar is taking part in this tournament.
