Zhangjiakou, China, February 12, 2022: Japanese ski jumper Ryoyu Kobayashi won his second medal of the Winter Olympics on Saturday when he finished second in the men’s large hill individual.
Kobayashi came close to recording a golden double after winning the normal hill title six days earlier but had to settle for silver behind Norway’s Marius Lindvik.
Lindvik took gold with a total of 296.1 points, with Kobayashi in second place in 292.8. Karl Geiger of Germany won the bronze with 281.3.
Kobayashi led after the first round with his score of 147.0 but was overtaken on the second round when the Norwegian was awarded 151.3 points to Kobayashi’s 145.8. Lindvik had scored 144.8 in the first jump to stand second.
Lindvik became the first Norwegian ski jumper to win the men's large hill since 1964.
Kobayashi became the second Japanese man to win Olympic medals in the individual large hill and normal hill events at a single Winter Games, after Kazuyoshi Funaki in 1998 (silver in normal hill, gold in large hill), and just missed out on becoming the fourth ski jumper to win both individual events at the same Olympic Winter Games.
"I didn't know the distance; I knew I was a little bit short," Kobayashi said of his final round jump. "If I was really on top form, I could have had a chance to do this."
