Lausanne, Switzerland, February 11, 2022: FINA President Husain Al-Musallam has revealed that there will be a FINA World Championships this year after all.
Fukuoka in Japan was due to host the 19th FINA World Championships from May 13-29, 2022 but they have been put back to July 14-30, 2023 to ensure a safe and successful event for all parties.
FINA announced on February 7 that an extraordinary FINA World Championships 2022 will take place in Budapest, Hungary from June 18 to July 3, 2022.
In a video message to the FINA family, President Al-Musallam said: “I have some exciting news that I want to share with you. There will be a FINA World Championships this year. They will take place in Budapest, Hungary from June 18 to July 3.
“I am so pleased for our athletes, who are going to get the chance to compete against the very best competitors in superb venues.
“I want to thank the government of Hungary and the city of Budapest for making this possible.”
The FINA President said high diving would not be part of the world championships in Budapest but said FINA would be announcing some “exciting, alternative” plans for the high divers soon.
“To all our other athletes, I am delighted to be able to say I cannot wait to see you in Budapest next June,” he said.
The FINA World Championships for 2023, originally due to take place in Doha in November, have been put back to January 2024.
